Satara: The Cultural Capital of Maharashtra
Satara city gets it’s name after the seven hills (SaptaTara) surrounding the city. It is situated in western Maharashtra or Deccan Region. Nearest well connected airport is Pune airport and one can think of going for 120 km drive on a beautiful road (Pune – Bangalore Highway) to reach Satara from Pune. Busses start from Swargate Bus Station in Pune almost hourly.
It should take 2 – 2.5 hours maximum by road. Train journey is also possible from Pune Railway Station to Mahuli Railway Station (which 4-5 km from Satara City). This mode of transport has to mature in frequency as well as speed.
Satara is having very good historical background and it is still continuing that connection. The Great Maratha King – Shivaji conquered Satara port in 1673. After that many generations of Maratha king ruled this region from Satara. Still, direct descendents of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj live in Satara. Entire district is filled with remains and forts of Maratha kingdom, which tell story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Independence struggle also had prominent presence from Satara. Krantisinh Nana Patil was running Prati Sarakar (Parallel Government) from Satara.
